11th Grade English - American Literature, College Prep (Period 1A)

Course Description

The eleventh grade English curriculum has been designed to increase student ability in connection with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy to ensure college and career readiness. The five categories of focus are reading literature, reading informational text, writing, speaking and listening, and language (written conventions). The course will prepare students to succeed in the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBAC), SAT, and ACT tests. Students will improve their writing skills by completing a variety of timed and take home writing projects, including narratives (stories), responses to literature, informational and expository texts, as well as Performance Tasks to help them prepare for the SBAC. Students will work on improving their listening and speaking skills by working with partners and small groups, and by participating in whole class discussions, debates, and Socratic Seminars. Students may deliver speeches to the class, evaluate the presentations of others, and prepare multimedia visual aids. In class and at home, students will read a variety of multicultural literature, such as novels, short stories, poems, drama, as well as non-fiction texts, such as news articles, editorials, research, and historical documents to critically analyze complex texts, practice new reading strategies, and develop their academic vocabulary.
