Our Two-Year Kindergarten Program

The O'Farrell Charter School operates a two year kindergarten program.  Students will be enrolled in kindergarten for two years, then move on to first grade after successful completion of the kindergarten curriculum.  Students whose 5th birthday falls between September 1 and December 1 of the academic year in which they are enrolled are eligible to attend kindergarten at OCS.  Below are course descriptions for both our first and second year kindergarten classes.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
YEAR ONE KINDERGARTEN: Year One Kindergarten students build a strong foundation for early literacy and are provided with developmentally appropriate instruction for early learners, ages 3 to 5, including cross-curricular activities, a focus on social-emotional development and preparation for kindergarten and beyond.  Students learn the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.  They learn to understand the structure of a narrative through story telling, ask and answer questions based on text with support, and make predictions.  Students learn to write the letters of the alphabet, simple sight words, and their name.  INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: World of Wonders

YEAR TWO KINDERGARTEN: Year Two Kindergarten students learn in a centers-based environment that reinforces concepts with multiple levels of workstation differentiation and opportunities for collaboration and the use of academic language in the areas of reading, writing, and phonics/word study.  Leveled readers are used and arranged to accompany the thematic units, each with a culminating assessment.  Lessons in each unit address the same theme, subject, content, skill, and strategy with connection points to move up to the next level as soon as students are ready.  Students master sight words and, with support, create sentences that connect together to create simple paragraphs.  INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Wonders.
