Welcome to the Eighth Grade Learning Center! The purpose of this class is to help students improve their grades and standardized test scores (CSTs and CMAs), and to make progress toward their IEP goals. Students are placed in learning center based on their grades, test scores, and study habits from the previous school year.  Although students are sometimes allowed to request to be in learning center, students are generally moved out of learning center when their grades, study habits, and test scores improve.

Classroom Procedures and Activities:

  1. When students arrive to the learning center, they will remove their learning center binders from the shelf, and turn to their Daily Learning Center Form for that day (M, T, W, Th, or F) and sit down in their assigned seat. Their Daily Learning Center Form will tell them what assignments they will be working on for the class period. They assignments will include working on homework and classwork for their general education classes, as well as activities that are specifically designed to help them improve their basic skills in Language Arts and/or math.
  2. Students are expected to be sitting down and turned to the correct Daily Learning Center Form by the time the bell rings. After the bell rings, they will have one minute to circle any assignments that will need assistance with, and begin working on their first assignment.
  3. After students have completed all of the assignments on the Daily Learning Center Form for that day and had their form filled out and signed by an adult in the room, they will be allowed to do a free choice activity for the rest of the class period.  These activities will include playing school related games on computers, playing board games, free choice drawing, and other activities that students will enjoy. Students will still be monitored during free time to make sure the activities they choose are appropriate for school.

Grading: Students will receive an A, B, C, D, or F in learning center based on the number of points they earn throughout the semester.  They will have the opportunity to earn 3 points every day by completing the assignments on their Daily Learning Center Forms. They will also have the opportunity to earn points by taking tests and quizzes throughout the semester. These tests and quizzes will be based on the specific areas where students need improvement. 75% of students’ grades will be based on their Daily Learning Center Form points, and 25% will be based on tests and quizzes. They will be able to earn 5 extra credit points by returning this form signed by their parent/guardian by this Friday.

Behavior: The behavior management system for this class will be based on the campus wide progressive discipline system. Students will receive a warning for their first violation of school rules, a classroom consequence for their second violation, and will be sent back to HB with a referral and a consequence based on where they are on the progressive discipline system for their third violation. Students may skip steps for causing major disruptions in the classroom. Students will receive an O, S, N, or U based on the behavior points they earn throughout the semester. They will have the opportunity to earn 3 behavior points every day, and will lose one point for every progressive discipline strike they receive.
