COVID-19 Update

San Diego County has been removed from the state watch list, and some schools are starting to entertain the idea of reopening. At this time, The O'Farrell Charter School does not have a planned date for reopening and will instead focus its efforts on refining its distance learning program. To ensure that all safety requirements are met, we will continue with distance learning through mid-October. This date guarantees we will continue distance learning past the first grading period.

Over the next few weeks, we will monitor county health data and reassess our plan. We are adopting a safe reopening plan that is aligned with county and state guidance, which will be evaluated by the county, and then go to our board for approval. We will communicate its details with stakeholders prior to our physical reopening. When we are able to open our campus to students, families will still have the option of participating in a full distance learning program.

We wish you a safe, healthy, and engaging 2020-2021 school year.

1st Day of School-August 19-Distance Learning

July 18, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you may have heard, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an order about California's school reopening plan. This order requires all districts that are located in counties on the state’s public watch list to start the school year with distance learning until certain conditions are met. This includes San Diego County. Therefore, The O’Farrell Charter School will begin the school year fully online.

We are carefully reviewing the new order to determine what this means for our schools. We recognize that continuing distance learning poses challenges for families and we will continue to work diligently to develop plans that have at their center, the academic, social, and emotional well-being of all students and families. We will spend the remaining summer weeks ensuring we have a quality distance learning program to serve all of our students until public health conditions improve.

O’Farrell will begin our new year with a distance learning program that is much more robust than before. Last spring was a response to the pandemic with little time to transition online and address technology needs. Although O’Farrell adapted quickly to provide instruction, meals, and socio-emotional support during the initial stage of the pandemic, we are more confident in our plans for the fall. As required by state law, students will all now be required to adhere to daily live interaction with staff, attend required classes, and complete and submit work. We will be submitting our new required Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan to the Board for public comment and approval by no later than September 30, 2020. We will continue to provide your child with a high quality education in an online environment until we are able to safely return to our campus. Our first day of online instruction is August 19, 2020. We will be in touch with specific school information as it relates to your child.

We will communicate with you throughout the summer as additional information and details are available and we encourage you to communicate with us your needs and questions through this process as well. Now is the time to show the strength of our entire school community. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we adjust to these ever-changing conditions to keep students and staff safe and emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever.

Sincerely,
Susan Cuttitta
Interim Superintendent
